Tomomi MATSUBARA

Born in Osaka, Japan, Tomomi MATSUBARA started playing the accordion at the age of eight. After finishing high school, she went to France to study classical accordion. After studying at the Conservatoire municipal Paul Dukas, she finished the Artist Course at Folkwang Universität der Künste in Germany. Matsubara studied under Max Bonnay and Mie Miki. While staying in Germany she taught accordion at Musikschule Kaarst.

She gained the third prize at the 5th JAA International Accordion Competition, and was chosen at the 9th Contemporary Music Performance Competition ‘Kyogaku IX’. She performed in one of the regular concerts of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, took part in the final of The Music Competition of Japan, featured in the Composer Group Cue vol.7, the Ibaraki New Work Concert, the Kanazawa Night Museum 2014, and in the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra’s special concert (conductor: Valery Gergiev), among others. She has performed with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Sinfonietta, Art Respirant, the Geidai Philharmonia Orchestra, the Tokyo Chamber Orchestra, the Kyoto Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra.
Tomomi MATSUBARA is active in premiering performances of commissioned works for accordion solo and chamber music. She also develops new repertoires for the accordion. She teaches accordion in Osaka and Nara, Japan.
