Over the third movement of his Symphony No. 1, Ludwig van Beethoven inscribed the heading: “Menuetto. Allegro molto e vivace” – which is a paradox: A minuet is a dignified, graceful dance, but “very fast and vivacious” is certainly not the way to dance it! Clearly Beethoven wanted to inject some energy into this part of his First Symphony. Not to mention sharp, surprising dynamics.
That is the kind of effect the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie excels in. A calmer stretch in the middle of the movement gives them and the listener a bit of breather before all are caught up again in the swirling Beethovenian energy.
And which is Paavo Järvi’s favorite Beethoven symphony? The one he happens to be performing at the moment, as he told DW. That said, the maestro also revealed that he’s particularly partial to Ludwig van Beethoven’s First, Second and Fourth Symphonies.
