Liszt – Faribolo pasteur, S236/1 (Gugnin)

Gugnin’s stupendous live performance of Liszt’s arrangement of a Pyrenean folk-song, written in the same year as his meeting (the first for many years) with Caroline De Saint-Cricq. Unquestionably, this event must have stirred Liszt considering the history between him and Caroline: after both formed a passionate attachment to each other in 1828, Liszt was shown the door by her father who reminded the young, pre-fame Liszt of the difference in class between the daughter of a Count and a humble piano player (the results of which led to Liszt suffering a nervous breakdown and succumbing to intense religious mania, all lasting for two years).
