Leonard Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

NYO-USA performs Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story in the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut on July 22, 2014, under the direction of David Robertson. Watch additional highlights from this concert at: http://bit.ly/1nCz8oF

West Side Story, first produced on Broadway in 1957, is universally recognized as a landmark in the history of American musical theater. After an initial run of 732 performances, it returned to the Great White Way for the first of many revivals in 1960, the same year in which Leonard Bernstein invited the show’s orchestrators to extract a concert suite from his score.

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young musicians from across the country (ages 16-19) to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA). In 2014, following a two-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers were joined by conductor David Robertson and violinist Gil Shaham for an eight-city coast-to-coast US tour.
