F. Joseph Haydn’s masterful oratorio The Seasons, from 1801, embraces the joy of human life set against the changing course rounded out by each calendar year. Here Haydn writes rich evocations of the natural world’s interaction with humanity — festive winter parties, hunting expeditions, and peasant dances — as well as vibrant imitations of nature, including thunderstorms and croaking frogs.
