Led by Singapore’s Wong Kah Chun, chief conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the virtual performance, Beethoven 360°, brings together a cast of musicians from across 25 nations performing music from the renowned German composer’s Ninth Symphony.
Remember to catch it tonight (30 Jul), 8pm SGT (GMT+8) here:
It is supported by the National Arts Council, as part of the #SGCultureAnywhere campaign which brings together the best of Singapore’s arts and culture digital offerings, to be enjoyed and experienced anytime, anywhere. It is also supported by The Straits Times as official media in conjunction with its 175th anniversary.
More than 2000 man hours were spent on score preparation, individual recordings and post-production to create a powerful visual and aural experience. The musicians are integrated into a 360-degree experiential landscape depicting turmoil, a dream of utopia, a garden city paradise, heavenly clouds and finally the cosmic world, which accompanies the musical narrative from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
The production, which took place amid the Covid-19 pandemic, is created using digital submissions from world class instrumentalists and singers from institutions such as the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Dresden Boys Choir, Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Nuremberg Symphony, Orchestre Nationale du Capitole de Toulouse, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir, Philharmonic Chorus of Tokyo and Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.
They are joined by more than 1,000 participants as part of a global campaign for a singalong in the renowned Ode To Joy segment. This inter-generational bridging of professional musicians and committed amateurs from 25 nations in the digital space is a symbol of hope and global solidarity, reflecting Ode to Joy’s message of inclusivity, diversity and universal brotherhood.
