As early as his debut in 2006, the orchestra felt that Kirill Petrenko was a very extraordinary conductor – charismatic, captivating, revolutionary. “He was like a meteor”, remembers violist Matthew Hunter. It was only logical that the Berliner Philharmoniker should elect him to succeed Sir Simon Rattle as chief conductor in 2015.
