Bruckner’s Ninth by Giulini and the invaluable contribution of the Vienna Philharmonic strikes us by its exceptional breadth. In the first movement, the titanic conflicts are pushed to their paroxysm and the lyrical episodes are rendered with great beauty. The architecture is very clear, due to the width of the breath, and the Scherzo has no difficulty in contrasting, before the final Adagio (a tribute to God “dem lieben Gott”) of a nobility of phrasing and an overwhelming height of conception. Finally, this long is infinite vibration which, at the end of this unfinished symphony, makes the silence resonate…
