프랑스 출신의 유대계 미국의 지휘자, 바이올린 연주자 및 작곡가.
Lorin Varencove Maazel (from March 6, 1930 to July 13, 2014) is a
Jewish American conductor, violinist and composer from France.
* 이 공연은 북한 전역 뿐만 아니라 전세계에 생중계되었습니다. 지휘자 마젤은 공연후
자신의 인터넷 홈페이지에 “아리랑이 미국인과 북한 사람을 하나로 만들었다”고 평가했습니다.
연이은 서울 공연을 위해 인천공항에 도착했을 때 로린 마젤은 기자들에게
“북한 사람들로부터 기대를 훨씬 넘어서는 생애 최고의 환대를 받았다”고 소감을 밝히기도 했습니다.
마젤은 북한의 인권 실태를 지적하면서 뉴욕 필하모닉의 평양 공연에 비판적인 여론이 제기 되자
월스트리트 저널 신문 기고문을 통해 “예술은 전적으로 무정치, 무당파이며, 특정 현안과
연계돼서도 안된다”며 공연 결정을 옹호하기도 했습니다.

김정일 국방위원장 간의 남북정상회담 (2007.10.2~10.4)
약 5개월 후에 이루어진 공연이기도 했습니다.

동평양 대극장은 천장 음향 반사판을 새롭게 설치하는 큰 공사를 벌이기도 했습니다.

* For the first time ever performed by an American orchestra in North Korea,
was broadcast live not only across North Korea, but around the world.
On his internet homepage, Maazel said, “Arirang brought Americans and North Koreans together.”
After arriving at Incheon Airport for a successive Seoul performance,
“I received the best hospitality of my life,
far exceeding expectations from the North Koreans,” he said.
As Maazel pointed out the human rights situation in North Korea and criticized the New York Philharmonic’s performance in Pyongyang, he defended the decision to perform in an article in the Wall Street Journal newspaper, saying, “Art is completely non-political, nonpartisan, and should not be linked to a particular issue,”
* Note: This concert was also held about five months after the inter-Korean summit between President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea and Kim Jong-il, chairman of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in October 2 to October 4, 2007.
* In order to accommodate the New York Philharmonic Concert,
the first American orchestra in history in North Korea,
East Pyongyang Grand Theater also undertaken construction
to install additional large ceiling acoustic reflectors.
