The string quartet is the form in which Shostakovich’s genius has manifested itself with the greatest strength and depth. As admirable as the ensemble is, it is in four of them that the composer’s creativity reached its peak: the 8th Quartet, a pivotal work, a secular requiem that illuminates no hope, the austere and brutal 10th on the 12th, enriched by a search for atonality, and the 15th, a terrible funeral song that resounds like an echo of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ. The interpretation of the Soviet musicians is admirable for its harshness, its architectural mastery and its power of evocation. Intensely dramatic, often very oppressive, the Borodin Quartet offers a deeply moving testimony, engraved for life in the marble of reference recordings.

Sviatoslav Richter and the Borodin Quartet have produced a version of the Quintet that is not close to being equalled. The absence of colour and the severity of the tone create the atmosphere of greyness in which Shostakovich’s works are bathed. But above all, Soviet artists pulverize the neo-classical language of this Quintet. They translate the dramatic intensity with masterful nobility.
