Just as Obelix fell into the pot of magic potion when he was a child, we have the impression that Rudolf Kempe fell into the pot of the works of Richard Strauss. There is a spontaneity in his direction, a naturalness, an incessant forward motion, a dynamic that we don’t find in any other conductor. This consistency is all the more incredible because it is present in all his recordings. This sixth sense in his direction is tremendously relayed for the orchestra for which Strauss himself conducted his works: the Staatskapelle Dresden.
The orchestra has had eminent conductors throughout its history. Heinrich Schütz’s name is associated with his early years, and those of Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner in the nineteenth century. With these two personalities, Dresden and its Staatskapelle played a central role in the creation of German national opera at a time when the genre was dominated in Germany by Italian music. In the twentieth century, this tradition was partly continued by the collaboration between the orchestra and Richard Strauss, both as conductor and composer.
