Ottorino Respighi : Villanella for flute, viola & harp | concert live

This transcription was made by the trio BECEL and recorded during a live performance in Incourt (Belgium) in 2019.

We transcribed the 1st suite of ‘Ancient Airs and Dances’ that is itself a transcription from original pieces for lute. We like to think of classical music – or music in general – as a living medium of which the primary function is to communicate. It is like language that changes and evolves over time. This Villanella was born somewhere in Italy around the end of the 16th century, then took a completely new form and sense in 1917 when Respighi rewrote it for small orchestra. And voilà, a new version a hundred year later for an even smaller orchestra…
