RICCARDO CHAILLY and the Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra delivered in 2013 this flowing and sumptuous performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony whose marked modernism and amazing transparency provide a truly breathtaking and unique experience
This is a work that many conductors “extended” up to 90 minutes and more, while Maestro Chailly resolves it in about 75 minutes.
But one never perceives neither the slightest marking of a rushed performance nor – ultimately – of a cold one.
Make no mistake, in some respects, this is an icy reading, but when the “ice” shines in such a refulgent light and, moreover, it is endlessly in motion, the tension prevents from noticing even the most biting cold, indeed there is no break until the last bar, i.e. until the symphony slowly fades into nowhere.
