Memory of Maestro Lorin Maazel (March 6, 1930 — July 13, 2014)
Lorin Maazel was an American conductor, violinist and composer. He made his conducting debut at the age of eight. He started his career in 1953, establishing a reputation in European and US. He would later be appointed Artistic Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and General Manager of the Vienna State Opera, as Music Director of the Radio Symphony of Berlin, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic.Lorin Maazel was an Honorary Member of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Vienna Philharmonic, with which he has conducted the New Year’s Concert eleven times, and has received the Hans von Bülow Medal from the Berlin Philharmonic. Lorin Maazel died on July 13, 2014, at his Castleton Farms estate in Virginia, from complications of pneumonia.
