Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin: Lovro Von Matacic & the Philharmonia Orchestra

Lovro Von Matacic conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Published in 1959 by EMI as part of the HMV Concert Classics Series. Catalogue No. XLP30070

This is a digital restoration from a vinyl LP which was originally part of my grandmother’s record collection.
Since stereo record players were still an expensive novelty in the late 1950s, the Concert Classics series albums were release in mono and stereo versions. This record is the mono version.
For the restoration process I used a Thorens TD280 II turntable with Audio Technica cartridge and Cambridge 540P pre-amp, Xonar D2 sound card, Audacity editing software and specialist click removal and de-noise software.
Unlike the “Pop” Concert restoration, where I wanted to keep the sound as close as possible to the original recording, I decided to “ad lib” a bit with this restoration since the original recording sounded rather dull by today’s standards. I have added some equalisation and also introduced a delay on the RH channel to create a “pseudo” stereo effect and make the recording sound less flat.
